Rezension

Das nach wie vor unterschätzteste Album des King zu seiner Glanzzeit: Die Gospel-LP aus dem Jahre 1960 haben ihm viele Rock'n'Roller mindestens so übel genommen wie seine wässrigen Soundtracks im folgenden Jahrzehnt. Ein fataler Irrtum, denn es enthält etliche der besten Vokal-Performances des Jahrhundertsängers Elvis Presley (und wird von der seriösen Kritik auch längst zu seinen besten Arbeiten auf Albumlänge gezählt). Keinesfalls religiöser Süßstoff – Elvis' Versionen von "Joshua Fit The Battle", "Working On The Building" und etlichen anderen Repertoireklassikern rocken ganz gehörig. Doch seine ganze Phrasierungskunst entfaltet sich in den langsamen Nummern: Der Titelsong etwa mag etwas zuckrig beginnen; was folgt, ist eine Glanznummer, die von seiner "Blue Moon"-Sternstunde zu frühen Sun Records-Zeiten gar nicht so weit entfernt ist. Dazu kommt, daß die Jordanaires, des Königs bewährte Harmonielieferanten, hier mal nicht unterfordert werden und ihre große Kunst des Satzgesanges von der Leine lassen können! Elvis, der sich selbst weniger als rebellische Identifikationsfigur sah denn einfach als Sänger, begegnet den Meisterwerken der schwarzen Lithurgie mit dem größtmöglichen Respekt: Ein derartiges Gestaltungsniveau erlebt man sonst eher im klassischen Kunstlied. Nicht nur ein Höhepunkt der Elvis-Diskographie, sondern auch der Gospel-Geschichte! (1960/2022)
