Rezension

Die besten Aufnahmen von Opus 56 folgen zwei Grundregeln: Erstens, man darf das Werk, Beethoven hin oder her, nicht größer machen, als es ist und jemals sein sollte. Zweitens: Es ist eben kein Solistenkonzert, es ist Ensemblemusik, Kammermusik mit Orchester sozusagen. Das junge und brillante Ensemble, das hier zu hören ist, befolgt sie beide – man spürt das schon am Charme von Kanneh-Masons ersten Cellotönen. Wunderbar ist auch der leichte, doch herrlich "gesungene" Ton von Nicola Benedetti! Heimlicher Held dieser Aufnahme allerdings ist der Pianist: Nicht nur ob der transparenten Gestaltung der eigenen Solo-Parts, sondern fast noch mehr an den Stellen, in denen das Klavier auf begleitende Funktion reduziert wird – hier agiert Grosvenor wie ein idealer Lied-Begleiter. Apropos Begleitung: Begleitet wird diese Einspielung von einer Auswahl von Beethovens selten gehörten schottischen, irischen und walisischen Liedern, gesungen (und dabei dem unbeschwerten Geist des Hauptwerkes sehr schön folgend) vom kanadischen Bass-Bariton Gerald Finley!
